Goat Island is located 100 metres from the safe beach access in the Marine Reserve. It is famous for it's amazing New Zealand snorkelling and kayaking providing safe and shallow conditions for all the family to explore. With the channel only 2 metres deep and west of the island 3-8 metres deep this protected environment remains calm and easy to snorkel. You can Snorkel and Kayak straight off the beach into the Marine Reserve all year round, making it a convenient way to see an abundance of marine life. We recommend you wear a 3mm shorty/full length wetsuit for thermal & sunburn protection and to aid your buoyancy during your snorkel. Full foot fins will save energy and a mask and snorkel will allow you to eye ball the fish without having to raise your head from the water to take a breath. Goat Island Dive shop offers quality snorkelling gear for you to either hire or buy.

Kayak Goat Island
All kayaks are a stable 'sit on top' design. The marine reserve is a kayaking paradise. Explore the coastline and caves in comfort.
Hire prices
- Single kayaks - per hr $20 (max load 110kg)
- Double kayaks - per hr $30 (max load 220kg)
- Shorty wetsuit 3mm - $14 (We advise wearing a wetsuit as your bum will get wet.)
Beach goers
For those not wanting to get wet there is plenty to see and do. Walk around the rocks to the right at low tide. You will come across Blue Maomao channel cutting through the rocks. An awesome sight with Snapper, Parore and Blue Maomao darting around in the channel for the viewers to see. Or stroll down the beach towards Pakiri Beach (go left) until you reach the rock flats with rock pools displaying many of the oceans critters left behind with the tide.
