How does the guide always know where to find that special piece of coral or unique marine life underwater?

Through the SSI Navigation Course, you’ll gain the confidence and ability to explore new places, map dive sites, and always find your way back safely. Once you master these skills, a whole new world of underwater adventure opens up.

What You’ll Learn

The SSI Navigation Program runs over one day and includes:

• A theory session covering natural and compass navigation

• Two in-water dives to practice mapping and orientation skills

​

In class, we’ll discuss:

• The two main types of navigation — natural and compass

• How to navigate naturally using sand patterns, light angles, landmarks, and water movement

• All the features of a compass and how to use one properly beyond the basic reciprocal skill from your Open Water Diver Program

In-Water Sessions​

During our two ocean dives, you’ll put your new skills into action:

​

• Practice both natural and compass navigation methods

• Learn to map your dive site and repeat simple compass routes

• Progress to advanced compass routes and mapping using slates

• Build awareness of your position and direction underwater

​

You’ll gain a real understanding of underwater navigation, learning to think and move like a guide — always aware of where you are and where you’re headed.

By the End of the Course

​

You’ll be able to:

• Confidently navigate your own dives

• Keep track of your underwater location

• Plan and execute dives independently

Once you know how to navigate, every dive feels more relaxed and rewarding. We recommend investing in a high-quality compass to keep your new skills sharp and continue developing your independence.

Our Guarantee and Commitment to You: 

• Minimum age 12 years 

• Comprehensive Training: We are committed to providing you with all the necessary information and training to ensure you complete the course safely and to a high standard. 

• Qualified Professionals: Our scuba instructors are carefully selected for their professionalism and expertise in teaching scuba diving. 

• Weather-Related Rescheduling: In the event of unfavourable weather conditions that hinder the completion of your course, we offer the option to reschedule based on our course schedule and availability.  

• Your Commitment to Us: 

• Medical Statement: Please carefully review the medical statement. If you answer 'YES' to any of the questions, we require your doctor's consent affirming your fitness to dive. We cannot provide dive training without this consent. This check must be completed before enrolling in the course, as your deposit covers your Online Theory and certification fees and is non-refundable. 

• Deposit Validity: Your deposit remains valid until the 1st of May for the respective season you've booked. 

• Re-booking Fee: If you need to reschedule your course with less than one week's notice, a NZ$200 re-booking charge will apply. 

• Course Non-Completion: In cases where a student cannot complete the course, the course cost is non-refundable, and a $200 re-booking charge will be incurred for enrolling in another course. If additional sessions are necessary for course completion, these extra sessions will be subject to additional fees based on the nature and extent of the additional training required. 

• Safety Guidelines: For your safety during training, the excessive consumption of alcohol and/or drugs is strictly prohibited. Timely arrival at the designated course times is mandatory. 

• Equipment Purchase Consideration: We strongly recommend seeking guidance from our instructors before purchasing your equipment to prevent costly disappointments.
