New Skills

As you gain confidence in the water, you might want to start to pushing your limits and seeing what more you can achieve. With this in mind, it is important to expand your knowledge and understanding to keep safe in the water.

Equalizing

Pressure under the water increases as we descend so it is important to learn how to balance this pressure.

Holding your Breath

Increasing your breath hold time takes practice  - you don't have to be in the water to train!

Clearing your Snorkel

There are a few different ways of clearing a snorkel, once you crack the technique you'll be much more comfortable.

On your Guided Tour

You will meet at our Goat Island Dive and Snorkel Center. Here our friendly staff will fit you out in your equipment which is provided: mask, snorkel, fins, a wet suit and weight belt.

You will then drive in your own vehicle 3km to the Goat Island Marine Reserve. Here you will meet with your Instructor.

The experience starts with the history of Goat Island and introduces you to the marine life you are likely to meet at New Zealand's first marine reserve. After your full and thorough safety briefing, we'll head down to the water and begin the tour!

We will begin with a recap in the shallows. once everyone is comfortable with their equipment we will begin to explore the reserve. Along the way we will stop and put our new techniques into practice, getting you comfortable in the water, with duck diving under the surface.

After the tour you will be able to use the equipment for the remainder of the day, so you can keep practicing and enjoying the reserve.

All Equipment Included

Mask & snorkel: These allow you to see and breathe with your face in the water.

Fins: Give you more propulsion in the water.

Wetsuit: Will keep you warm and buoyant in the water, and very important for sun protection!

Weighting: We provide weight belts to compensate the buoyancy in the exposure suit. This allows you to be neutrally buoyant in the water making duck dives a lot more fun.

You even get to keep the equipment for the rest of the day if wish!

What is snorkeling?

Snorkeling is when we use a mask and a small tube called a snorkel to see and breathe with our face in the water. This allows us to observe the underwater world and the wealth of life it hosts. Snorkeling is a fantastic way to begin to learn to swim in the ocean.

Safety

Goat Island Dive and Snorkel is a fully Adventure Mark audited company.

Under the supervision of your instructor you'll stay safe and looked after at all times. We'll wear quality equipment and never take you out in unsafe conditions.
